This club, seven years old, is devoted to learning strategies and techniques that will enable them to quickly solve problems and code them up, as they prepare for competitions at local universities and colleges against other high schools in the area during the spring. The likely members of this group are any computer programming students. The skills learned to participate in these competitions are also beneficial to students during the regular semester as well as beyond academics. Students are taught about what programming is like in industry and how peer-to-peer collaboration is important in solving the world's problems.
The focus of programming is using JAVA. The reason for this is that all of the local competitions only allow the students to program in JAVA and it serves as an excellent preparation activity to study for the AP exam. Our students will participate in competitions at Loyola, the University of Maryland-College Park and Montgomery College. The students have a blast at these competitions. In the 2008-2009 school year, Sherwood won 2nd place at Montomgery College. In the 2009-2010 & 2010-2011, Sherwood placed in the top 50% at the University of Maryland-College Park competition. The club members this year are fired up and can't wait to go again. In 2011, the competition team won 1st place at Montgomery College.
Members of this club and members of the Game Club joined together and entered in the Global Game Jam competition held at University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) and won. This was an exciting time for Sherwood. This was the second time in a row for me as a teacher to mentor a winning team! The students on the winning team are: John Stelben (senior), Nick Ducq (junior), Ryan King (sophmore) and Craig Weiss (sophmore).
The 2011-2012 Leadership team for the Computer Programming Club are:
You Can Do the Rubik's Cube
An additional competitions include the Rubik's Cube competition at the USA Science & Technology Festival down on the mall in DC which was held this past October. Currently, this club has a few students that are very good using the rubik cube. If you want to practice for the next upcoming competition, here is the solution guide. Students on the Rubik Team actually meet an additional day, Fridays, from 2:20PM to 4PM in Mrs Thomas' classroom, A107. They meet in the same room as the Anime Club and sit in the back rows to work on their timing. If Anime Club is cancelled, the Rubik team does not meet.
The 2010-2011 Rubik Competition Team are as follows:
The club needs to inform me of who is on the competition team this year.
The 2011-2012 CyberSecurity Challenge Competition Team are as follows:
All members of both teams are 2011 finalists in the Maryland Cyber Challenge!. Way to go! The final competition is scheduled for the weekend of Oct 21-22, 2011.
There is also another competition that the members of this club will be able to participate in and that is the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (NACLO).
